Is it really true that it takes 7 years to digest gum?

Question by *blueberrysocks*: Is it really true that it takes 7 years to digest gum?
It seems a little weird that it takes that long, and I’ve swallowed gum like 5 times, so I doubt that it’s still in my stomach….does anyone know how long it actually takes to digest it? I was just curious when my sister came home from school all freaked that she was going to die cause she swallowed gum…..

Woops, Swallowed my Gum…It is a myth that, if gum is swallowed, it can take seven years to be voided from your body. Every person’s digestion time is different, but it generally takes 24-72 hours to digest any food.

Some foods will not break down in the stomach and will remain whole in the feces, such as corn (in some individuals) peas, gum, etc. Food passes through the stomach to the small intestine and then into the large intestine for further digestion and absorbed by water. Any undigested food (such as those mentioned above) will be passed in the feces in a 24-hour period and other foods can take several days to pass completely.

Warning: In some rare cases, children that constantly swallow their gum can have a blockage in the intestines, but this is rare.

Gum does not digest, it ends up in your waste a day or two after swallowing it.
